From the Editor:

One can hardly utter the name Vacchiano without thinking about the ever-dreaded concept of transposition. Vacchiano’s desire to master transposition came about, in part, from his constant search to play passages on the most comfortable trumpet, thus insuring the best chance for success. Still another more obvious need for a strong knowledge of transposition is the prevalence in our literature of difficult pieces which must, by necessity, be transposed. Additionally, as many freelance players will attest to, it is not uncommon to find yourself in a rehearsal or performance, having to transpose on sight! Doing this well can be quite impressive to those who hired you while fumbling over notes may result in your not getting asked back. Finally, for pedagogical reasons, transposition is a part of one’s technique that can prove useful in improving other areas, such as sight-reading, facility in harder keys and ear training.
