Oskar Bohme had the most incredible trumpet performing career. He played in the Budapest Opera Orchestra and then moved to St. Petersburg to play cornet for 24 years in the Mariinsky Theatre. He eventually turned to studio teaching and composing at a music school on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg for nine further years, and then returned to opera with the Leningrad Drama Theatre until being exiled by Stalin for his German heritage.
Bohme’s chamber studies and chamber music for trumpet are perfectly complemented by this collection of music for cornet. The same romantic nuance and melodically driven compositional style are present here, augmented by the thick and luscious piano accompaniment you would expect from solos of this era. If you haven’t had a chance to perform these, you are going to have such a blast going through them for the first time.
