Andante et Scherzo is a lively and virtuosic solo written by Parisian composer J. E. Barat. Many of Barat’s solo compositions fit into the Paris Conservatory competition style, and this showpiece is no exception.
This piece covers two full octaves for the soloist, between B natural below the staff and B natural above. The soloist would need to employ either a very fast single tongue or a precise multiple tongue for the Scherzo section, where there are lots of sixteenth note flourishes and runs.
