Subtitled “The Improvisational Style of Jim Rotondi”.

These transcriptions contain a wealth of information for anyone seeking to broaden their understanding of modern jazz vocabulary. Jim Rotondi is one of the finest players in jazz music today, on any instrument, and these solos, carefully selected and transcribed by Eric Siereveld, give a beautiful snapshot of his improvisational concept–fiery, swinging, tradition-based, and forward-looking.

Eric Siereveld had the pleasure of being Jim’s front-line mate in many situations, most notably in Charles Earland’s quintet and of course in the sextet One For All. With One For All, his writing and soloing have been so consistently outstanding that, when he’s unable to make an engagement (due now to his relocation to Graz, Austria), his absence leaves a void that is nearly impossible to fill. A few months ago, Jim came back to New York to perform at Smoke. After the first set of the weekend, without prompting, Harold Mabern (who knows something about trumpet players) ran up to the talk mic on stage and said to the audience, “There are a lot of great trumpet players out there, but “Jimbo” is number one!”

These solos will provide technical and conceptual challenges for students at all levels. I’d encourage people to play a-long with the original recordings in order to get a feel not just of what Jim is playing, but HOW he is playing it. The “how” is in many ways more important than the “what”. Most of all, enjoy this fantastic study tool.
