Frank “Porky” Panico was the cousin of the great Louis Panico, who was the father of the laughing trumpet and soloist with the Isham Jones Orchestra (his book, “Novelty Cornettist” can be found here). Frank was known the world over for his catchy jingles, like the Doublemint Gum jingle, as well as playing in some of the best stage and dance bands in the country. Just like his cousin, Frank gave in to years of public pressure to explain how he achieved all of the effects and affectations of the jazz style, and he wrote this book to share his lessons with the world. Frank outlines the idea in his foreword:

This method is designed to fill a void in the instructional materials for the trumpet. Since the rise of the school stage band, students and directors have been faced with technical and developmental problems which are not covered in the traditional trumpet training literature. This method is designed to provide training material in stage band techniques.

This method has been written with the following two qualifications or limitations in mind. First, it has been presumed that the student using this method has been playing trumpet for several years and that he has acquired a good basic technique with good embouchure, tone, etc.

Second, it has been decided to limit this method to those techniques currently used in the “big band” or “the stage band”. Solo techniques have not been specifically considered although many of the techniques studied here are applicable in solo playing.

Good technique is good technique. If a player has acquired a good, solid basic trumpet technique he will not have to discard any of it in order to become a stage band trumpeter. This method deals with the additional techniques that must be acquired.

Outstanding method for the “Dance Band” player. This was the book many went through at Berklee in the ’70s-the book was published there (edited by Ray Kotwicka) in ’57!
