Forestier was a prolific author of everything brass. These long lost duets were referred to as “Lyrical Studies” for two trumpets or cornets back when it was written, and I can see why. These duets were composed in the vocalise style, with beautiful soaring melodies consistant with the best operatic solos of the time period.
These two parts are very much equal, with solo bits given to both the bottom and the top parts throughout. You can usually tell when a duet book is meant to be used in concert, like this one, because the first and second parts come in separate books so each performer can have his own stand. In this case, we condensed the two books into a single two-staff book as we more commonly use today, and it works as perfectly on the stage as it does in the studio.
