34 Studies for Low Horn By Albin Frehse

These etudes provide an extensive exposure to the low register with an abundance of old-notation bass clef. Varied key signatures (to six-flats and five-sharps), intervallic and rhythmic problems appropriate to early twentieth-century tonal writing, and rapid shifts between open and stopped horn all contribute to these worthwhile etudes. There is a strong need for horn students to thoroughly study low horn etude hooks. The basic solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire require this range only sporadically, which is the point. Students must create the opportunity to develop a low-range facility, since it is not handed to them elsewhere.
