Erik Veldkamp’s “20 Swinging Range Studies (3 Ways)” is the companion book to his incredible high register method book “Unlocking the High Register.”
This collection of 20 Swinging Range Studies is a book unlike any other. It is clearly established that being gradual and progressive in your approach to playing in the upper register is the only safe an effective way to expand your playable range. With that in mind, Erik wrote two sets of 20 upper register studies (40 studies in total), beginning with Level 1: Intermediate, and then two different versions of the 20 advanced studies with Level 2: Advanced, and Level 3: Advanced +, the “Advanced +” being transposed up either a 2nd or a 3rd to match players at different levels.
The biggest problem with range books is that the odds of the studies being in the exact range you are currently working on is very slim, so their usefulness is limited. That is why Erik wrote his 20 Swinging Range Studies in progressive stages. The three books included in this listing are:
What I love about Erik’s three-book Unlocking the High Register collection is that it is the natural 21st-century successor to the wonderful method book combo written by Bud Brisbois (“Trumpet(s) Today”). Erik understands, like Brisbois did, that learning the theory behind high register playing simply isn’t enough. It has be applicable to actual music-making in a variety of styles, or else there is no use in learning it at all. By taking a musical approach to lead trumpet playing you can win the mental side of the game which takes you 90% of the way there.
To the left I have included samples from each book. When you are ready, click above for an immediate digital download.
