Zeitlöcher (Music for Trumpet & Accordion) by Christopher Brakel was composed in the fall of 2003 for Jason Price. The title comes from the German and can be translated as“Timeholes.” I came across the singular form of this German word in a poem by Paul Celan, and it triggered an immediate desire to write a piece dealing with time, silence, and perceived rhythm. While this piece is not related to the poem directly, it is a short study in linear motion, specifically exhibited in the composite melodic material between the two instruments.
